So, you’ve mastered the basics. You know your Imp from your Satan, and you’ve managed to survive your first few trips through the afterlife. But as the table thins out and life tokens become a rare commodity, the "Mid-Game" begins—and that’s where the true champions of A Life In Purgatory are made.

If you want to move from survivor to ruler of the realm, you need to sharpen your strategy. Here are three pro-tips for dominating the mid-game.

1. Keep Your Lies "Short and Sweet"

One of the most common mistakes seasoned players make is trying to "oversell" a bluff. They draw a Purgatory card, choose the fake option, and then start adding elaborate backstories or extra details to make it sound more convincing.

Pro-Tip: Stop talking. The game was intentionally designed so that you don't have to be a master liar to win. In fact, the rules strictly forbid offering extra information to "sell" your point. Your goal is to read what is written on the card and nothing more. By keeping your delivery short and sweet, you avoid tripping over your own exaggerations or giving away your lie through tells. Let the text do the work, and let your poker face do the rest.

2. Hunt for the "Grey Areas"

We will let you in on a little secret: we intentionally designed A Life In Purgatory with "grey areas." While the core rules are solid, the wording on certain Heaven and Hell cards contains gaps and technicalities.

Pro-Tip: Don’t break the rules, but do find the loopholes. We encourage players to look for creative ways to interpret card text and gaps in the instructions. Can you stack a specific character ability with a certain buff in a way that wasn't immediately obvious? Finding these strategic gaps is part of the fun—embrace the "technicality" and use it to outmanoeuvre your opponents.

3. Commit to a "Soul Style" Before You Begin

Because of the way the Heaven and Hell decks work, your success often depends on your consistency. Drawing from the Heaven deck requires being believed while telling the truth, while the Hell deck rewards successful deception.

Pro-Tip: Decide your playing style before the first Purgatory card is drawn. There are three main paths to victory:

• Truth-Focused: Primarily tell the truth to build a hand of Heaven cards. This style focuses on defence, buffs, and the ultimate win condition: hunting for the three Holy Grail cards. Patience is your friend, you want to build your hand and bide your time.

• Lie-Focused: Lean heavily into deception to stock up on Hell cards. This is an attack-based game play where you attack aggressively in order to secure the win early on.

• The Balanced Blend: A tactical mix of both. You keep your opponents guessing by alternating your truth-to-lie ratio, allowing you to hold both defensive and offensive resources.
